I would like to see more members mapping their locations of bird sightings.

Me too!!! I just found out about this site from the iPhone app & started mapping…but I am the only person in my town mapping. Hopefully my mom will start too!

I suspect that some members just simply add bird species to their list so that they can “creep up to the top of the list.” There is no benefit to other members, if they cannot search for sightings of birds in those areas that they might like to visit in future. I thought that was one of the aims of the website?

Maurice – what do you think about the idea of forcing all sightings to go through the map (aside from an initial lifelist upload)?

I like the idea of making sightings go through the map. Another idea could be to track new sightings separately from lifelists. If people are just adding birds to their list to move up the rankings this may encourage them to map new sightings.

I think that’s a great idea, Ben. Personally, the only times I’ve added sightings, after my life list, are local ones to put on the list.

Hi Ben, I think that`s a damn good idea. Apart from 5 un-mapped sightings which “will” be mapped once I`ve found them among my paper records, all the birds on my Life List have been accrued as a result of sighting and mapping, albeit sometimes from old paper records. I see little point in adding personal lists of birds on to a Birder`s Website when they contain little or no information of interest to others. I hope that members who visit the parts of the world where I do my “birding”, can gain some idea of what they can expect to see there from my sightings and mappings.

I think you should investigate the abuse that some people are doing to your website. I personally think it physically impossible to even approach 4,000+ true sightings in ones lifetime. To boast of this at a young age is totally outrageous and insulting to one’s intelligence.

Tell other birders about your favorite places, your favorite field guides, your favorite bird-related books, etc.
