Annas Hummingbirds

Hello there,
Does anyone else in Southern B.C. have Hummingbirds all year round? We have Rufous Hummers from mid March to mid August and the Annas are here from mid August to mid March. Of course we feed them and it’s pretty time consuming in cold weather, because we have to make sure that the nectar doesn’t freeze! As soon as I find out how to post a picture, I will put up some, with Annas feeding in the snow.

Maureen – we would love to see some images of Anna’s in the snow! To upload images of Anna’s you can 1) go to the Anna’s Hummingbird page and hit “Upload an Image” or 2) Go to your “MyImages” page under the “MyBirds” tab and enter them there.

looking forward to it!

Hi Mo,

Where are you located in Southern BC? I would love to see an Anna’s. I am in Maple Ridge but have not heard of anyone having them here year round.

Anna’s Hummingbirds regularly overwinter in the Victoria area as well as the Lower Mainland. Also a few will show up and winter in places like the South Okanogan, or Creston Valley, though its fairly rare that they do. Best Places for them in the Lower Mainland in winter is West Vancouver.

Hello Ryan, Jen,and Ben
The Anna’s are still with us and we are all prepared with the heat, lamp to keep the nectar warm just in case we have snow tonight. Where are you located Ryan?

We are still getting snow and are in the worst winter in 44 years and the hummers are still with us---tough little devils, but what a lot of work to keep them alive.
