I can’t find the gray-headed junco(junco caniceps)on the list. Saw several along Colorado Trail last week, and they were not the yellow-eyed junco(phaeonotus).

According to Sibley, the Gray-headed and Red-backed Juncos are both forms of the Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis). He doesn’t list them separately.

Hi Mary; thanx for the reply. Surprising the hyemalis and the caniceps are not listed separately(by anyone); I see vast color and shape differences just comparing the many sample pics for the hyemalis in Birdpost. The rusty backs and smaller breasts of the caniceps are quite distinctive characteristics.

You won’t find the “Gray-Headed” or “Red-Backed” forms listed seperately on Birdpost because both are sub-species of Dark-Eyed Junco and Birdpost does not list sub-species.
