Hi everyone,I’m new here and am trying to load my life lsit but birds like Red Throated diver aren’t available?? Ruth |

Hi Ruth, I`m afraid you need to try and find the species within the American name system, by searching using their scientific latin names. For example a Grey Plover is known to them as Black-bellied Plover, or a Kentish Plover as Red-capped Plover. Divers are Loons. You get used to it after a while. Maurice. |

I forgot to add; a Red-throated Diver is a Red-throated Loon. That`s an easy one. Try Stone Curlew and you`ll find it listed as a Eurasian thick-knee. Even Sand Martins are Bank Swallows. And I`ve only been a member since December 2008! Maurice |

We may shortly allow for uploads to Birdpost with either British or American common names and this will solve the problem. |

Thanks Maurice and Ben. |

The only one I can’t find now is Common Starling??? which for some reason doesn’t appear in the list??? |
|
|
Our Starling is listed as an “European Starling”. A lot of our birds are prefixed “European or Eurasian”. The American system on Birdpost dosn`t differentiate sub-species either. For example : Dark or Pale Bellied Brent. They are both lumped under Branta, in spite of being two obvious sub-species. |

Got it!! Thanks for all your help & info Maurice! |

Maurice and Ruth - 1. Birdpost uses a world taxonomy, and as such, labels birds with both “American” (as in “American Robin”) and “Eurasian” or “European” (as in “European Starling”) prefixes. 2. We will shortly allow for the upload of scientific names that will cut through any confusion with common names. 3. We will also be shortly implementing a feature that allows for birds to be uploaded by their UK common name, as in the Divers (Loons). Thanks for all the great feedback! Ben Crockett |

it would make much more sense if the root name of all species in your database was the latin name. all people from all languages would then be able to load their birds. |

We will be doing this shortly… Ben Crockett |
